Philanthropy in Education: Global Trends, Regional Differences, and Diverse Perspectives

On 22-24 November 2017, the Inaugural Symposium “Philanthropy in Education: Global Trends, Regional Differences, and Diverse Perspectives” took place at The Graduate Institute in Geneva and was attended by approximately 140 participants from 80 organizations representing universities, philanthropies, policymakers, bilateral donors, program implementers, and international organizations. Philanthropic and CSR support for the Right to Education Act: A Platform for discussion and research, co-organized with the India Development Foundation (IDF)

As part of the Philanthropy in Education Symposium Series, NORRAG and India Development Foundation (IDF), with support from Dr. V Santhakumar (Azim Premji University) organised the first roundtable “Philanthropic and CSR support for the Right to Education Act: A Platform for discussion and research” in New Delhi, India, on 27 April 2018. China Global Philanthropy Institute in collaboration with NORRAG and the 21st Century Education Research Institute organised the conference:“Philanthropy in Childhood Education in China: Trends and perspectives” on 15 January 2019 in Beijing, China. This is the third event in the Philanthropy in Education Symposium Series. The event in China was organised with the support of the Laoniu Brother & Sister Foundation.

31 Jan – 1 Feb 2019, Johannesburg: Philanthropy in Education in South Africa: A space for learning and collaboration, co-organised with the Zenex Foundation and the Human Science Research Council (HSRC) (find out more)

As part of the Philanthropy in Education (PiE) series, the Zenex Foundation, NORRAG and the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC), organised a roundtable discussion bringing together philanthropies, implementing partners, researchers and government representative to discuss the experience and approaches used by philanthropic organisations to support improving education quality in South Africa. The roundtable discussion took place on 31 January – 1 February 2019 in Magaliesburg, South Africa.

The George Clement Bond Center for African Education, in collaboration with NORRAG, organised on 9 April 2019 at Teachers College, Columbia University, a panel discussion on “Investing in Education in Africa: Diverse Perspectives on Innovative Financing.” The event was co-sponsored by Teachers College Vice President’s Diversity and Community Initiatives Grant Fund, Tri-State Area Africa Funders and the Tamer Center for Social Enterprise, Columbia Business School.

CIES 2019 (14-18 April 2019, San Francisco):  Two panels on Philanthropy in Education (find out more)

NORRAG and its network members participated in the Comparative and International Education Society (CIES) Annual Conference on 14-18 April 2019, San Francisco, USA. With the growth and evolution of philanthropy in education worldwide, NORRAG’s panels sought to explain the possible impact of new philanthropy and other similar approaches as it bypasses existing policies and practice.

The regional Philanthropy in Education international education symposium, Silicon Valley Philanthropy: ‘Disruption’ and the Implications for Educational Development was held to illuminate a new style of philanthropy emerging from Silicon Valley. With technological innovation as the core influence that created much of the wealth driving the new philanthropy, it is no surprise that disruption, innovation and impact are the center of an emerging ‘giving code’.

NORRAG and the Brazilian Campaign for the Right to Education (BCRE) are engaged in an international effort to facilitate dialogue, research, and stakeholder collaboration for understanding how private actors, especially philanthropy, engage in education and interact with the Right to Education (RTE) in Latin America, the Caribbean and Lusophone Countries.

The final symposium of symposium series Philanthropy in Education: Reflections and Actions towards 2030 was to be held in the United Arab Emirates on May 31st & June 1st 2020. The event is hosted by the Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Foundation for Policy Research in Ras Al Khaimah, UAE.
