The KIX EMAP Hub Webinar 20 will be organised in partnership with the Research on Scaling the Impact of Innovations in Education (ROSIE) project, facilitated by the Millions Learning project at the Center for Universal Education (CUE) at Brookings as part of GPE KIX, on the topic of scaling impact in education. The purpose of this webinar is to share key insights and lessons learned on scaling impact in education with key stakeholders from the EMAP region; engage in discussion and dialogue around these topics; and learn from the expertise and experiences of all participants, including their own approaches, challenges, and questions related to scaling.

The webinar will introduce the concept of scaling for impact, and then explore three key scaling themes that have emerged from the past three years of ROSIE scaling research. These themes include centralising equity in scaling work, the role of research for and about scaling, and engaging champions in support of scaling. 

KIX teams from the EMAP region will share illustrative examples of how these themes play out in practice in their own work. The session will allow time for questions, reflections, and discussion between the presenters and the audience.

Speakers

Molly Curtiss Wyss, Senior Project Manager and Senior Research Analyst, Center for Universal Education, Brookings

Molly Curtiss Wyss is a Senior Project Manager and Senior Research Analyst at the Center for Universal Education (CUE) at the Brookings Institution. As a member of the Millions Learning team since 2017, Molly’s work focuses on issues related to scaling and sustaining quality education innovations and initiatives for all children and youth in low- and middle-income countries. Her recent publications include “Scaling impact in education for transformative change: Practical recommendations from the Real-Time Scaling Labs,” and “Adapting, innovating, and scaling foundational learning: Four lessons from scaling Teaching at the Right Level in Botswana.” Prior to Brookings, Molly worked as a research consultant for the Global Business Coalition for Education and Theirworld, a global children’s charity committed to ending the learning crisis. She holds an M.S. in Human Rights from the London School of Economics and Political Science and a B.A. in International Relations from Carleton College.

Brad Olsen, Senior Fellow, Center for Universal Education, Brookings

Brad Olsen is a senior fellow with the Center for Universal Education in the Global Economy and Development program at the Brookings Institution. Prior to this, Olsen was a professor of education at the University of California, Santa Cruz. His research focuses on teachers, teaching, and teacher development; school reform; global comparative education; and qualitative research methods. Olsen’s most recent book is “Teaching for success: Developing your teacher identity in today’s classroom” (2016, Routledge). Olsen was series editor for “The Teacher’s Toolkit” (2010, Paradigm Publishers). He is a recipient of the 2007 Excellence in Teaching award from the University of California, Santa Cruz. At Brookings, Olsen’s work centers on research and policy around the scaling of educational innovations for systemic improvement in low- and middle-income countries around the world.

Gembo Tshering, Lead Investigator, KIX Project “Enhancing Data Utilization and Decision-Making in Bhutan’s Education System: Motherboard Integrated Education Monitoring and Information System”, Paro College of Education, Royal University of Bhutan

Dr. Gembo Tshering, PhD, is a teacher educator. He started his career in education as a Royal Civil Service-employed mathematics and physics teacher at Daga Middle Secondary School, Dagana, Bhutan. He worked as an Assistant Principal and a Principal before he was transferred to Bhutan Board of Examinations, Ministry of Education, Royal Government of Bhutan, as the Mathematics Subject Specialist, and was then appointed as the National Coordinator for National Education Assessment Programme for Bhutan. He earned his MSc in Educational Evaluation and Assessment at the University of Twente in the Netherlands. Upon returning to Bhutan, he worked as an Expert Staff for Royal Education Council under His Majesty’s Secretariat, Bhutan. He earned his PhD in Educational Evaluation and Assessment at La Trobe University in Australia. In 2013, he was transferred to Paro College of Education, Royal University of Bhutan, as a lecturer in Educational Evaluation and Assessment. He has been teaching in Paro College of Education ever since. Since 2014, he has also been working as the Controller of Examination. His teaching areas are assessment, teaching pedagogies, statistics, and educational research.

Binayak Krishna Thapa, Principal Investigator, KIX Project “Promoting Gender Equality and Social Inclusion in Schools Building on What Children Value and Aspire to Do and Be”, Kathmandu University

Dr. Binayak Krishna Thapa is an Assistant Professor, Development Studies at Kathmandu University’s School of Arts (KUSOA). He leads the Learning, Innovation and Knowledge Exchange Lab (LIKE Lab), a social science lab at KUSOA. He is a Principal Investigator of the project titled ” Promoting gender equality and social inclusion in Schools building on what children value and aspire to do and be” being implemented in Nepal, Bangladesh and Bhutan, and the Project Leader of “Effectiveness and Scalability of Programs for Children Who Are Out of School and at Risk of Dropping Out in Bangladesh Bhutan Nepal.” These action researches are awarded by the GPE KIX -IDRC. His areas of academic are the capability approach, education for development, poverty measurement, governance, and citizenship studies.

Вебинар 20 Хаба KIX EMAP, посвященный “Масштабированию воздействия в образовании”, организован в партнерстве с проектом “Исследование масштабов воздействия инноваций в образовании” (ROSIE), осуществляемым при содействии проекта “Обучение миллионов” (Millions Learning) Центра всеобщего образования (CUE) в Брукингском университете в рамках GPE KIX. Основная цель мероприятия – поделиться ключевыми идеями и извлеченными уроками по масштабированию воздействия в сфере образования с ключевыми заинтересованными сторонами из региона EMAP, принять участие в диалоге и обсуждении обозначенных тем, а также обменяться опытом, включая подходы, проблемы и вопросы, связанные с масштабированием.

На вебинаре будет представлена концепция масштабирования для обеспечения воздействия, а затем рассмотрены три ключевые темы масштабирования, которые возникли в ходе исследований проекта ROSIE за последние три года. Темы включают в себя централизацию и социальную справедливость в работе по масштабированию, роль исследований масштабирования и в его целях, а также привлечение лидеров в поддержку масштабирования.

Команды KIX из региона EMAP поделятся наглядными примерами того, как данные темы реализуются на практике в их работе. Предусмотрено время для вопросов, размышлений и дискуссии докладчиков с аудиторией.
