16 November in Bern - "For forgotten children and youth: education in emergencies" (RECI)
Thursday, 16th November 2017, 9.15 – 16.30 | Bern University of Teacher Education, CH-3012 Bern
An event organized by the Swiss Network of Education and international cooperation (RECI) and supported by Swiss Solidarity.
Since the year 2000, the world has seen important progress towards the right to education for all. Nevertheless, too many children and youth are still lacking education opportunities: they are denied access to a school or they drop out too early, due to external forces.
The most precarious situations are observed in the context of humanitarian crises. More than 50% of the «out-of-school» children and youth are living in countries and regions affected by conflicts or war, by frequent natural disaster or long-lasting fragility. Offering education to these children and youth means preventing lost generations and giving a chance to build perspectives for their future.
Today, the international community recognises “Education in Emergencies” as a priority issue on the agenda of “Education 2030”; and hence, a majority of RECI’s members are engaged in educational programs in the contexts of emergencies. In our event we will present an overview on the actual situation and challenges, discuss specific experiences and best practices of different actors in the area and finally develop perspectives for further cooperation.
