31 May in Bern- Launch of the The SDC’s Education Strategy on Basic Education and Vocational Skills Development and the SECO Position Paper on Skills Development

Basic education and vocational skills development are powerful drivers in the fight against poverty, as well as for economic and social development. Education is a catalyst for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations and for the creation of a just and peaceful society.

Children and young people are our future and important actors of change. In order to positively influence change, they need quality basic education, which offers perspectives and values. Through vocational training and qualifications, they can increase their chances of income and work.

Building on these themes, the SDC will launch its’ new Education Strategy on Basic Education and Vocational Skills Development and the SECO Position Paper on Skills Development on 31st May 2017 in Bern.

Education and economic development are traditional themes of Swiss development cooperation and transition assistance. In the Federal Council’s message on Switzerland’s international cooperation 2017-2020, basic education and vocational training are considered priority topics. Over the next four years, the SDC will increase its commitment to education by 50%. In addition, SECO will strengthen its commitment to improving professional skills. The latter are essential to the development of a flourishing economy and the creation of jobs.
